life update and anime review, why not

Posted by DreamsBellArt - 1 day ago

This is the longest injury ive ever had, and the longest i've gone without being able to create new art. it has felt like living a waking nightmare for 7 months now.

Through many doctor visits i cant afford and different prescriptions i cant afford and a newfound dedication to my health, i've started to feel a little less pain in my arms so i can draw a little bit now, more than nothing.

Will i heal soon?

Who knows?

however i am going to continue limiting my movement until i can heal so that i dont damage myself further.

It has been nothing but agony for half a year, and i'm doing all i can to distract myself so i dont lose my mind.

In other news, these past months i havent had much i'm able to do with my limited abilities aside from take walks and watch videos, so i've tried to watch a couple of older anime that ive had my eye on for a long time.

here are my unformatted reviews:

The first was Heavy Metal L-gaim (1984)

I've heard it was a pretty groundbreaking and innovative early mecha anime so ive always wanted to see it. It was about 54 episodes i think so it took me a while to get through (but thats a good thing since i need to kill lots of time.) I enjoyed it a lot. The plot was something i expect from the time period it was made in, with a very 80s mindset and plenty of aspects that wouldnt age well by modern standards so consider that if youre sensitive and planning on checking it out. There were also a handful of episodes in the middle where they started to throw in random nudity as a punchline to jokes which was out of nowhere and didnt fit the vibe of the show. unsure why, but no matter. There was a surprising amount of comedy with the characters, and i found plenty of it to be funny and enjoyable, especially the rival character Gavlet Gablae- who is basically the 80s anime equivalent of Rouxles Kaard from Deltarune, its very bizarre but funny.

the animation was about as good as you could ask for from something of that era as well. The color schemes of the characters and machines were very pleasing. Many fight scenes had very striking panel cut-in shots with characters faces while the mechs fight, which I thought looked incredible- I really appreciated those when it happened. There were a lot of well-drawn scenes when something important happened, and some pretty impactful scenes with the characters. I also really liked that every episode ended with a stinger image showing a new character or mech you haven't seen yet, and text on screen typing out things like "NEXT HEAVY METAL: G-ROON" to get you intrigued for the next episode. That was very unique to me.

The dialogue was well-written and there were a lot of memorable lines that will stay with me. I realized once starting the 2nd half of the anime when Mk.II shows up that this was the mecha designer who did the mechs for Five Star Stories, which was a pleasant surprise since i've always loved those. The final 5 or so episodes were an incredible close to the story and so bombastic. The two opening theme songs are also extremely good.

The second thing i watched was Corrector Yui (1999)

I saw the opening to this anime a long time ago and i was intrigued by the designs, so i took the dive and really loved the first episode. The premise of a magical girl show taking place in cyberspace and her acting as an antivirus to fight virus enemies was very neat and the settings and designs were reminiscent of a lot of videogames that i loved from around the millennium like Megaman Battle Network and Mischief Makers, so i was excited to watch more of it.

I got through 6 episodes before stopping. I was disappointed to find that it was a pretty standard magical girl affair for plots and very formulaic each episode, which normally doesnt bother me too much, but this one just didnt snag me for some reason. Moreover the animation quality took a noticeable dive after the first episode, with a lot of characters constantly appearing very off-model in most scenes. Its a shame because the character designs are top-notch, and the colors and backgrounds and settings/setpieces are gorgeous.

Also the music was done by Kenji Kawai, who is one of my favorite composers! However, his music doesnt stand out too much in this one unfortunately. only the transformation theme song sounded like the work he's known for. i just couldn't get into the show, maybe it was meant for a younger audience? i just felt that it was too simplistic in its story maybe. Perhaps it gets better later on? maybe i'll try and go back someday to watch more, time will tell.

Those are the only notable old things ive watched lately I think, though i always have more on my list that i want to watch someday. thanks for reading.

Very cool animes :)
Maybe I'll watch Corrector Yui!
It's also very reassuring that you're feeling a bit better.
You like mecha?

You may enjoy Yui better than i did! good luck to you. Thank you for the kind words as well.
And yes i love mecha very much

Hopefully you can heal sooner rather than later, but until then just keep doing what you need to and take your time. Hope everything goes well!

Thank you very much, i appreciate it

Best wishes for your health!
I still remember something of Corrector Yui from when it was on TV, but the opening was not the original one.
It's not about mechas, but I'd recommend the second Vampire D hunter movie, it has nice drawings.
